Keeping track of cheap wireless services

Will use this to keep track of cheap wireless services. Alternative to att, verizon, etc. Why do we have to pay $150-300 a month for family cell phone plans?

My thought is a fair plan would be about $30 or less for phone service with calls, text and some mobile data. A better deal would be about $15 or less.

(1) First on the block is freedompop.com. I have my nephew Henry testing it out, will need to extract more real world feedback from him. So far this is the only service where I have real data (phone/mobile usage and some contact with customer service). There seems to be something shadow-ish going on, "free", but maybe $1 a month min. I'll watch the credit card.

(2) Another one is called scratch wireless.  Here is a review of their service Their service only works on wi-fi which is great 80-90% of the time. Kids generally use text/web searches. Use phone calls about 0-5 times a week, which is my guesstimate. Our kids text us when they need to be picked up, but even if your kid usually calls to be picked up...where are they calling from?.....School --free wifi, physical therapy...free wi-fi, Orange Leaf, other restaurants...free wi-fi. They sell mins and cellular data, but if you get both, that is $30 a month...too much if you are looking for extreme cheap.

(3) One that caught my attention early was TING. They let you pick what services you want. Check out their rate calculator There is a base fee of $6 per phone. They run on the Sprint network (same as freedom pop), which in Cincinnati is OK, but not great as there is only mid-range mobile speed, no true 4g that i ever saw and I had Sprint for a few years thru mid-2013.

(4) https://republicwireless.com/  -- is another lower cost service.
